New type of drywall: what is

To 40% reduce energy consumption in buildings will allow a new type of drywall developed by scientists from the Madrid Polytechnic University. The secret of new material in the huge number of paraffin beads contained in it.

The usual sheets of drywall are made of pure gypsum, and the new development includes not only gypsum, but also paraffin microcapsules, which compose almost 50% of the total material. With an increase in temperature in the building, paraffin also heats up and becomes liquid. Paraffin, when changing its condition from solid to liquid, partially absorbs heat from the air while lowering the temperature in the room.

At night with a decrease in air temperature, paraffin freezes again and produces previously preserved heat, helping to protect the internal space of the building from cooling.

The tests of this witty technology showed that the heat capacity of new material is five times greater than that of modern drywall. In addition, it was found that the heat capacity of the sheet with a thickness of 38 mm from the new drywall are equal to indicators of the heat capacity of the masonry made of hollow brick 150 mm thick.

As a result of testing the new drywall in Spain, its ability to maintain a constant temperature of the premises was noted, and without the operation of the air conditioning system, if the ambient temperature changes from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius.

The developers themselves say that the idea of using the properties of the materials of the phase transition for the production of building materials is not new, and even on sale on the market there is one similar product. The difference is that the existing drywall contains only 12 % of paraffin, and when using a new production technology, it is possible to manufacture sheets of drywall, in which the paraffin content will be 45 %.
